Innovation areas
To join the Leading Utilities of the World, a utility must demonstrate exceptional innovation in at least three of our key Innovation Areas, along with a clear commitment to continuous improvement. These areas reflect the most significant challenges and opportunities facing water and wastewater utilities in developed economies—from technology and asset management to customer service and environmental performance. By organising our work around these shared priorities, the Innovation Areas provide a common language for excellence, enabling members to learn from one another and apply leading global practices within their own local, social, and regulatory contexts.
Risk management and disaster recovery
Innovations in measuring, assessing, predicting, and managing environmental, weather, climate-related and/or man-made risk in order to create resilience for the local community. Disaster recovery is intinsically linked to risk manangement in terms of preparation interventions. In addtion, disaster recovery should also be demonstrated by solid example/s of speedy, low-impact recovery from natural and/or man-made disasters.
Wastewater treatment and environmental impact
Innovations in wastewater treatment systems, improving usable biomass output, and/or developing creative methods of obtaining quality measurements for wastewater reuse to support public health goals, odour control, landfill reductions, and the overall environmental sustainability of the local and surrounding areas.
